GENERAL SEMINAR – Dr. Jing Ren*, Key Laboratory of In-fiber Integrated Optics, Harbin Engineering University, Harbin, China

Rare-earth or transition metal ions doped nano-glass composites embedded with a variety of optical functional nanocrystals (NCs), have emerged as promising solid state luminescent materials for important photonic applications. Basically, by judicious compositional design and controlled thermal treatment, it is possible to grow any kind of NCs including fluoride, oxide and chalcogenide-type of crystals in glasses. The nano-glass composites thus obtained perfectly combine the advantages of both highly luminescent crystals and inert and robust inorganic glasses.

In this presentation, we will give several examples of developing novel nano-glass composites for 1) tunable and single-band upconversion luminescence, 2) ultrabroadband near-infrared, and 3) mid-infrared emissions. The microscopic distributions of the dopants were carefully examined, and the results offer important perspective to understand the enhanced luminescence in nano-glass composites.
